Eras and Their Highlights - Who Were The Celts And What Happened To Them?

Who were the Celts and what happened to them?

The Celts were a group of European people whose origin is unknown. By 500 B.C. they were living in present-day France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and the British Isles (England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales). In 200 B.C. they were also inhabiting parts of Bulgaria and Greece. The Celts were distinguished from other tribes mainly by their language, which did not resemble any other languages spoken in Europe and Asia. In about 300 B.C., when the Romans conquered most of Europe, the Celts were absorbed into the Roman Empire. Celts living in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, southwestern England, and Brittany (northwestern France), however, maintained their cultures, and today their descendants still live in those areas. The Celtic language was the basis of the Gaelic (Irish), Scots-Gaelic, Welsh, Breton, and Manx languages.
