One of the early painters of the Renaissance (a European revival of classical Greek and Roman culture; 1300–c. 1600), Sandro Botticelli (1445–1510) achieved fame in Florence, Italy, for his paintings of religious and mythological topics. Botticelli had a distinctive style. The lines in his paintings are gracefully drawn and all forms are clearly outlined. Compared to works by later artists, Botticelli's works appear flat because he did not use light or shade to create a sense of depth. He received many commissions, including the task of painting portions of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Among Botticelli's most famous works are Adoration of the Magi, Birth of Venus, and The Mystic Nativity.
