Did Michelangelo study anatomy?

Yes. In 1492 Italian artist Michelangelo Buonarroti (known as Michelangelo; 1475–1564), studied anatomy, a science that deals with the structure of the body. A master sculptor of the human form, he conducted his studies by dissecting corpses from the Hospital of Santo Spirito in Florence, Italy. Michelangelo was one of the important artists of the Italian Renaissance (a revival of classical Greek and Roman culture; c. 1300–c. 1600), creating such works as the anatomically perfect sculptures David (1501–1504) and Moses (1515). He is also famous for his frescoes (paintings on plaster) on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican (center of the Roman Catholic Church) in Rome as well as his paintings, architectural works, and poetry. Michelangelo is considered one of the greatest artists in human history.
