Although the short story treats the conflict between the man and woman equally and unbiasedly, the film version of Hemingway's story makes the girl a point of focus.  By developing her side of the conflict, the director and screenwriter have turned this from a story about communication between men and women to a story about the coming of age of a young woman.  Cleverly done!  Many viewers agree that they like this film better than the story because it does provide more development and resolution.
