For those of you interested in The Hero's Journey, how can we use this pattern in classes so that students can be self-reflective?  This may take us beyond "Why do we have to read this stuff?"  If students see how much can be gleaned from reading myths or legends from other cultures, perhaps they may see that no matter what the time period or geographic location, people have more in common than they realize.

I created an online community dedicated to exploring the Hero's Journey as a tool for self growth.  I use many of these exercises with my 9th graders in English class, and they seem to get a lot out of them.  I'm calling thsi community the 60 Day Sojourn, and I am hoping that people from around the world will join in sharing not only the stories of their cultures, but their own stories.

My pitch to the kids is to dare to be the hero of their own life story: heal yourself, heal the world!
