It is written in first person, but the voice isn't just one character. The first-person narrator is from the different characters in the book. Each characters tells about his/her experiences personally, making for a closer relationship with the reader. One chapter is told from the principal's point of view, while another is told from the point of view of a drug pusher. Each character states his/her case fairly so that no one character is totally good or bad.
