King Henry VIII came into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church when he desired a new wife and the Pope refused to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon in order to marry Anne Bolelyn in hopes of having a male child and, thus, preserve his lineage. Pope Clement, who was virtually a prisoner of Catherine's nephew, Charles V of Spain, was reluctant to raise the ire of Spain's king by annuling a marriage for which Henry had been granted...

In reply to #5:I'm afraid to tell you that you're feeling sympathy with a fictional character. The real Mary Boleyn, according to historians, was nothing like the character in the movie. For one thing, she was only 15 when she married William Carey, and they had a daughter together. You don't see that in the movie. Mary also was sent to France to be a lady in waiting to Henry VIII's sister Mary, who had married French king Louis XII. One...

I agree that it is very hard to decipher what is the truth and what has been made up. I think that the way all of those people deceived one another for rank and position in court is appalling to me. I dont think I could ever steal someone else's husband right out from under their nose, well let alone steal someone's husband anyway. I think there has to be some sort of truth behind the facts because why would someone want to make up such...

Phillippa Gregory has written many books on the Tudors, Anne Boleyn among them. She has mentioned in her research about Anne and her sister-in-law, Jane Boleyn, that both women were vindictive and ambitious to a fault. In fact, Jane was jealous of her husband's (George) close relationship with his sisters (Anne and Mary), which is the supposed reason that Jane gave evidence against the two of them and led them to the chopping block.

I think it is hard to tell exactly what went on. The old adage about the victors writing the histories kind of applies here, I suspect. It would be easy to make the people of London love or hate her, depending on what stories they were told...it is not as if they got to talk to her. Henry VIII needed really good reasons to have her executed, and I think it is just very difficult to know the truth.

I think the real Anne Boleyn was very cruel and mean. She demanded that Henry's daughter Mary not be called princess and took all of her jewels and made her a lady in waiting to her own daughter, Elizabeth. There are stories that when Katherine of Aragon died, Anne threw a party and dressed in a bright yellow gown, instead of the usual black of mourning. There has to be some reason why the people of London hated her so much!

Anne was part of an ambitious family in an age where a woman could usually advance only through marriage. She was groomed for an advantageous marriage from an early age. She was sent abroad to Austria and then to France, where she developed the charm, wit, and love of French manners and fashions expected of her in that sophisticated environment. When she returned to England, her social skills meant she could garner much attention. Her sister,...

When Henry VIII inherited the crown from his father, the monarch's finances were in good order. But Henry VIII's approach to governing England was different from his father's. He had extravagant taste in clothes, jewels and furs. He was considered the best dressed sovereign in the world. He liked to throw lavish parties and spent money with abandon. He loved to eat and surrounded himself with huge quantities of good food and drink.He...

Henry's real legacy, however, is the creation of the Church of England. When he found it impossible to get the pope's approval of his divorce from Katherine of Aragon, Henry VIII decided to show the pope who had the real power in England by doing away with the Catholic church and creating the Church of England, with himself at the head. And that,of course, presents the usual counterpart to men, wherein their increased power constructs their increased sexuality.I always get Blanchett and Paltrow mixed up. An interesting aside: in checking the spelling here,...

I have not studied Elizabeth at all, but what stands out in all popular accounts of her is how she "remade" herself in a very conscious way into an icon, a figure to unite and rule her country.
