Why does Hedda Gabler manipulate Mrs Elvsted into thinking that they are good friends?

I've always been curious about this. I am playing Hedda for a school assignment and I can't play this section without understanding why! Is it because Mrs Elvsted has information about Lovborg, or 'just cuz'?
