In the first line, we know that the speaker is Chinese American: "He thinks when we die we’ll go to China." To the speaker's young son, who has inherited his father's blond hair, Heaven is that place where everyone will look like him. One of their ancestors had emigrated to the United States to work on the railroads and had never returned to China. Although she and her son have never been there, in their blood is the longing to return "home."
