The setting of a story is just as you have stated: It is the time, location and social environment of the particular story. For example, in Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, the setting is a small, rural Alabama town in the 1930s (or possibly late 1920s). The social environment is also important in this story, since there are dramatic differences and divisions among the townspeople; the black citizens live in a different part of town than the white majority, and the white trash family of Ewells are further separated from both groups.
