Piriformis syndrome is caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle (hence the name of the syndrome) this causes pain in the buttocks and occasionally sciatica.  Symptoms are nagging pain, numbness, and tingling that starts in the butt and then moves down the back of the thigh and calf.  It can sometimes even reach all the way down to the foot.

Treatment includes temporarily stopping whatever activity that causes the pain.  If it is sitting try standing or at least changing positions frequently.  Stretching exercises of the hip and piriformis muscle can be beneficial and you can use over the counter NSAIDS for pain.  Sometimes a corticosteroid is injected into the place where the muscle and sciatic nerve cross.  Seeing a Physical Therapist can probably help get you started on the stretching exercises.
