Before the vaccine began in the mid 1960's, many children became deaf from having had mumps. In addition some people with mumps experienced very severe effects such as brain swelling and seizures as well as nerve and spinal cord problems.
The most common side effect of having mumps, among adult males, is swelling of the testees. For adult women, miscarriage in the first trimester is a result from having mumps.
Mumps is a viral disease and is very contagious. Therefore it is critical to have the vaccine.
