For my project in my advanced health class i am taking i chose to do mine on smokeless tobacco (strongly focusing on "chewing tobacco" being that my dad is a strong user) and for his health and the many people out there that do use chewing tobacco. i was wondering if there was a way of replacing the tobacco with something else?

In most drugstores and pharmacies there are products available to help a smoker "kick the habit." They contain nicotine, the "active ingredient," and help a smoker break the habit of the physical mechanisms of smoking (for example, the routine of taking out a cigarette, lighting it, then puffing away) before dealing with the problem of nicotine addiction itself. They come is decreasing quantities of nicotine (usually the packages are colour-coded to indicate the level of nicotine therein) to help a person ease away from nicotine dependance instead of going "cold turkey." These products would help a smokeless tobacco user as well. They usually have brand names referring to nicotine, such as 'NicoAid' or 'Nicostop' or something of that nature.

Drop by any drug store; the pharmacist there should be able to inform you about over the shelf products currently offered. Medical supervision, however, is advised.

Regular use of smokeless tobacco can lead to many diseases, the worse being oral mouth cancer.  Although many athletes, in particular baseball athletes, have used smokeless tobacco, it is now banned because of its ill health effects. Chewing gum has replaced this habit in many athletes as well as a gradual step down in nicotine program by way of nicotine patches, gum, or lozenges.  Other users have tried to quit by joining support groups like nicotine anonymous or entering into therapy.  Replacing the chewing tobacco with some other reward system, like a sugar treat or food item is also a way to substitute one vice for another.  Nicotine is one of the most powerful addicting drugs to kick, yet many people everyday do experience success in quitting.  With the right encouragement and persistence it is possible to help someone kick this habit.
