This allows him to extract the survival kit from the plane. It also enables him to get a close up view of the deceased pilot, which is not so comforting. The discovery of the entry into the plane continues the ongoing dialectic featured between the hope and despair which Brian both experiences and endures. It seems like the way the novel is structured is that there is a cyclical pattern between moments of joy and of frustration. Each time Brian experiences something good, or relatively benign, something bad happens. This is continued with something better transpiring. In this instance, the rescue plane having passed him over, his entry into the L-Shaped Lake and being able to enter the plane through the thin aluminum covering and finding of the survival kit is something positive that happens after a negative element.
