Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: Chapter 36 Summary

Dumbledore immediately uses his wand to summon ropes binding Barty Crouch Jr.  Dumbledore then takes Harry back to his office where Sirius is waiting to greet his godson. Harry is still in shock, so Dumbledore tells all that he knows to Sirius, but then needs to ask Harry about what happens after touching the portkey. Sirius begs for Dumbledore to allow Harry some rest, but Dumbledore asks Harry to share everything he knows with Sirius. Harry feels as though he will be unable to do so until Fawkes (Dumbledore’s phoenix) lands on his knee and give Harry encouragement. Harry tells the entire tale, but is unable to speak after revealing the wand connection. Dumbledore inserts some pertinent information here: Voldemort and Harry have wands that share the same core because both of them contain a feather from this exact phoenix named Fawkes. Harry finds his voice again and reveals the rest of the story.  Finally, Dumbledore allows Harry to leave with Sirius (now in the form of a big black dog) by his side.

They open the door to find Mrs. Weasley, Bill, Ron and Hermione all harassing Madam Pomfrey in order to find out what happened to Harry. Dumbledore immediately relates what has happened and demands that Harry get sleep without any questions, even from his friends.  Finally, Harry drinks a wonderful potion that puts him into a dreamless sleep.

Harry is awakened by the voice of Cornelius Fudge booming through the hallway. As Harry becomes more coherent, he finds out that Barty Crouch Jr. has been given the dementor’s kiss on Fudge’s orders. Now Crouch is unable to give testimony of what happened. Cornelius Fudge refuses to admit that Voldemort has returned.  Dumbledore is livid with Fudge because of this. Fudge eventually storms out while Dumbledore insists on immediately notifying anyone who can be persuaded of the truth. Dumbledore has Sirius reveal himself and asks him to collect members of the group who once fought Voldemort the first time he appeared. Before Harry takes more of his sleeping potion again, he is overwhelmed with guilt that Cedric died because Harry insisted Cedric touch the Triwizard Cup with him. Right before he falls asleep, Hermione catches something in her hand by the window.
