Chapter Thirty-Five
Veritaserum
Harry is immediately slammed to the ground at the beginning of the maze both with Cedric’s body and with the Triwizard Cup. Harry refuses to open his eyes for a long while, hearing footsteps and whispers all around him. Dumbledore flies to Harry’s side while Harry whispers that Voldemort is back. The entire crowd of onlookers of the Triwizard Tournament is shocked when they realize that Cedric Diggory is dead. Dumbledore must leave Harry in order to deflect Mr. Diggory, who is running towards them to see what has happened to his son.
Suddenly, Mad-Eye Moody is ushering Harry up to his office. Moody questions Harry about what happened. Harry learns that Mad-Eye Moody (or the creature inhabiting Mad-Eye) has been the traitor all year. He is a Death Eater who has faithfully been plotting against Harry for Voldemort the entire school year. Moody raises his wand to kill Harry, but is stopped by Dumbledore who enters just in time.
Dumbledore rescues Harry and reveals that the real Mad-Eye Moody has, in fact, been locked in a large trunk all year under a powerful Imperius Curse. The Death Eater pretending to be Mad-Eye Moody is none other than Barty Crouch’s son, who everyone thought was probably dead by this time but had truthfully used Polyjuice Potion to change his appearance. Dumbledore immediately gives Crouch’s son some Veritaserum from Snape to make him tell the truth (as Winky stands there horrified). Under the influence of the potion, Crouch’s son reveals the entire tale of how he stayed alive, penetrated Hogwarts, and helped to kidnap Harry. It was Crouch’s son who stole Harry’s wand and made it look like Winky had performed the Dark Mark. Crouch himself was put under the Imperius Curse which made him seem insane, that is until Crouch’s son killed his own father. At the end of Crouch Jr.’s Veritaserum speech, he reveals that he expects Voldemort to reward him above all other wizards.
