Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | Chapter 33 Summary

Chapter Thirty-Three

The Death Eaters

Voldemort is thrilled by his new-found body. He examines it closely and even caresses his new flesh. Voldemort finally calls Wormtail over (who thinks that Voldemort is going to heal his stump of an arm). Ironically, the reason why Voldemort called Wormtail this time is to point a wand at the Dark Mark somehow tattooed on Wormtail’s other arm in order to call all of his loyal Death Eaters to his side. Harry, of course, is still tied to the grave of Tom Riddle amid all of these horrifying creatures with his head still searing with pain. The Death Eaters all come cowering and groveling to Voldemort, even kissing his robes in submission. Voldemort is disappointed in most every one of the Death Eaters. Voldemort claims that Wormtail only returned out of fear, but still gives Wormtail an exact, silvery replica of a human hand to replace the one he lost in the cauldron. Voldemort performs the Cruciatus Curse on Avery.  The reader finally finds out that Lucius Malfoy is, in fact, a Death Eater after all (although one who ran away from the Dark Mark at the Quidditch cup). Voldemort acknowledges two “spaces” supposed to be filled with two members of the Lestrange family, both who would rather be in Azkaban than to renounce Voldemort. They are promised great rewards.  Voldemort spends a significant amount of time questioning the loyalty of all of the Death Eaters and reveals exactly how he came back to power. Voldemort had succeeded in planting a secret, faithful servant inside the grounds of Hogwarts in order to use all of the opportunities of the Triwizard Tournament to gain the things he needed in order to return.

After everything is clear about his return to power, Voldemort focuses on Harry once again.  Voldemort calls Harry the “guest of honor,” and wants to perform a traditional wizard duel with Harry in order to show the Death Eaters that Harry certainly could be killed by Lord Voldemort in that this insignificant Harry Potter was only a boy. Voldemort has Wormtail release Harry from his bondage to Tom Riddle’s grave and hands Harry his wand.
