Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | Chapter 27 Summary

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Padfoot Returns

Ron truly enjoys the aftermath of the second Triwizard Tournament task because he is getting to share in Harry’s limelight for once. Of course, Ron exaggerates the story a bit in order to make himself seem like a hero (instead of simply being under a bewitched sleep). Rita Skeeter’s notoriety continues as she goes out on a limb to publish a misguided story revealing the love relationship between Harry and Hermione (which, of course, does not exist).  Hermione is also accused of toying with Viktor Krum’s affections. The possibility is raised of Hermione making a love potion in order to achieve this affection. Hermione is furious as well as perplexed as to how Rita Skeeter is obtaining all of this supposedly secret information.

To make things worse, one day in potions class Snape accuses Harry of stealing something from his office (boomslang skin that Hermione stole in Harry’s first year and gillyweed that Dobby had stolen to give to Harry).  Snape threatens Harry with Veritaserum that would force Harry to tell the truth. Suddenly Karkaroff appears, showing Snape something disturbing on his forearm and insisting that Snape should have also known that “it’s never been this clear.”

Harry and his friends finally meet Sirius outside of Hogsmead Village a few days later. They collaborate in a hidden cave far outside of the town limits. Harry and Sirius talk for hours about everything, but they focus specifically on all of the recent mysterious events at Hogwarts: how Barty Crouch has suddenly gone missing, Crouch’s past in regards to fighting Voldemort’s followers called the Death Eaters, and a possible invader of Hogwarts who might want to murder Harry.
