Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | Chapter 25 Summary

Chapter Twenty-Five

The Egg and the Eye

Harry sets off to determine the secret behind the golden egg. He decides to use the Prefect’s bathroom because he figures it will be the least occupied. He also gets some unintended advice from Moaning Myrtle (the ghost who still inhabits the Prefect’s bathroom) as she spies on Harry from the sidelines. She suggests that Harry submerge the egg in the water. Harry does so and hears some eerie voices echoing from inside the egg. Through their song, Harry learns that something he loves will be taken from him and kept at the bottom of the lake.  Harry’s task will be to retrieve that item in time. This involves Harry having to figure out how to breathe under the water.

On his way back to Gryffindor Common Room, Harry decides to check his Marauder’s Map (the map that Fred and George Weasley gave him previously that shows everyone’s whereabouts in Hogwarts Castle). Harry is surprised to see Barty Crouch sneaking around in Professor Snape’s office. Crouch is supposed to be “missing” or “ill,” so Harry takes it upon himself to investigate. Harry is almost discovered by both Snape and Filch; however, Mad-Eye Moody appears and steers the two in the wrong direction. Mad-Eye is intrigued when Harry tells him about Crouch snooping about Hogwarts. Harry is happy to lend Moody the Marauder’s Map so that Crouch can be properly investigated. As Harry returns to his room, he contemplates Mad-Eye Moody’s suggestion that Harry be an Auror for his wizarding career.
