Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire | Chapter 16 Summary

Chapter Sixteen

The Goblet of Fire

Ron and Harry are in awe of Durmstrang’s Viktor Krum. Ron cannot help ogling at the famous Quidditch Cup player. Ron is even further taken aback when he finds out that one of the ladies from Beauxbatons is a Veela (the magical girls that held all the men’s attention on the sidelines of the Quidditch World Cup).

The students from the three wizard schools share a great feast together and, finally, Dumbledore explains the rules of the Triwizard Tournament. Everyone is amazed when Dumbledore reveals a great goblet of fire exhibiting blue flames. It turns out that the goblet, and not a person, is the “impartial judge” that Dumbledore spoke of at the beginning of the school year. It is this goblet of fire that will be deciding the champion from each of the wizarding schools. Dumbledore also gives a final warning about a special “age line” he will be drawing around the goblet in order to prevent any underage wizard or witch from entering.

A comic episode ensues when Fred and George Weasley try their best to get around the age line and put their names in. Even though they have concocted a special aging potion for the occasion, the age line throws them back right away as the boys quickly grow long white beards while everyone laughs.

The Hogwarts grounds are abuzz with anticipation for the announcement of the each school’s champion. The Goblet of Fire chooses Viktor Krum for Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour (Ron’s beloved Veela) from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory (whom Harry and Ron met at the Quidditch World Cup) from Hogwarts. However, before the crowd disperses, the goblet spews forth a final bit of parchment revealing an additional name: Harry Potter.
