Question:

In act 3 of Hamlet, why does the ghost appear in his nightshirt? Can he rest now that the revenge plot has begun to unfold?

    This is what most critics accept, in addition to the fact that the war preparations which were evident in Act I have fallen to the back burner of the play.  The ghost is no longer preparing for war since his son, young Hamlet, is executing that war for him.
