The humor provided by the gravediggers is an example of comic relief. At the end of Act 4, the audience learns of Ophelia's tragic death, which is truly sad news. Ophelia is a victim of circumstance, caught up in a situation she doesn't understand, someone who loses the man she loves and her father (to murder). The audience needs relief from the burden of this intense sorrow so Shakespeare provides a scene of comedy as he traditionally does following scenes of death.
