Polonius is working with Claudius and Gertrude to try to find out what is wrong with Hamlet.  Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have been asked to chum up to Hamlet to find out his thoughts and feelings and see what's bothering him.  They tell Hamlet that his mother wants to talk to him.  Polonius reiterates these words when he comes in, saying that the Queen is waiting for her son in her quarters.  Polonius then plants himself in the Queen's room to listen to the conversation so that he can report back to Claudius.  Unfortunately for Polonius, when Hamlet begins to berate and is thought (by Polonius) to have attacked the Queen, Polonius calls for help.  Hamlet thinks that it's Claudius behind the curtain, and stabs at where he heard the voice call for help.  Polonius ends up dead, escalating Hamlet's problems.
