Is Hamlet still relevant today?  Why?

Oh my yes! That is the beauty and timelessness of Shakespeare - his plays are truly relevant for all eras. Sometimes there will be situations that we consider archaic (in the case of Hamlet, we might think it weird that Ophelia allow herself to be so controlled by her father, Polonius, or that a prince would spend so much time in despair over his father's death), but overall, Shakespeare dealt with themes we are still dealing with today - death, grief, questioning our existence on this planet, jealousy, love, joy, silliness, sex...the list goes on!

Hamlet is relevant because there isn't a person alive who hasn't considered questions like, "Should I be here?  What is my purpose?"  Most people have had family troubles - If there is a perfect family on the planet, I've never seen it!  And many of us have felt caught between conflicting emotions like Hamlet and Ophelia.

Any teenager - any person - who has failed to take action because he/she fears the possible consequences can relate to this story.  Any person who feels betrayed by someone (such as a parent), but can't stop loving that person can relate to this story.  Just consider Disney's The Lion King - it is a modern adaptation of this classic story.
