Explain why the play contains so many interruptions. How do this various interrputions contribute to our understanding of the theme that Hamlet voices to Horation on V.ii. about the benefit of rashness, impulsiveness, indiscretions that should teach us that divinity shapes our ends when we "rough-hew" them. For instance, Hamlet orchestrates the play "Mousetrap" in order to observe Claudius' reaction and determine his guilt or innocence. This is one such interruption of Hamlet's story, and Hamlet himself inserts words into the players' mouths as well as directs how he should deliver them. In doing so, he has acted rashly, taking advantage of a happy accident that the players arrived in order to "shape" his own destiny. Posted by amy-lepore on Jan 22, 2009. |
