In "Guns, Germs, and Steel," why is it important to differentiate between proximate and ultimate causes?

    In order to  better understand what happened. The proximate cause of being stuck on the highway is that the car broke down. The ultimate cause is that you did not put enough gas in to get to your destination which caused the car to quit.
