In regards to Guns, Germs, and Steel, what are five factors contributing to the rise of food production?

    1. Wild foods become less available.  Hunter-gatherers kill off too many large animals and that makes that lifestyle less sustainable.
    2. More wild plants that could be domesticated became available at about this same time.
    3. Technological advances allowed people to harvest and store greater quantities of food that they cultivated.
    4. Human populations rise.  It's not clear how much this caused food production and how much food production caused it, but researchers believe there's a connection.  As populations rose, they needed to have better food supplies and started farming.
    5. The farm societies had larger populations and could drive out neighboring hunter-gatherers.

    This stuff all comes from Chapter 6 of the book.
