How is linguistic evidence used to draw conclusions about the spread of peoples in China, Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and Africa?

Having LOTS of trouble with this book.  Any info on this or any of the other discussion questions in the back of the book would be GREATLY appreciated.  Also I will give best answer to the first reasonable answer.  Thanks.
