These characters represent everything that a philosopher and an intellectual should AVOID at all costs, which is to submerge so much in philosophy that you cannot apply it to real life.
Laputans were, basically, intelligent but moronic. Even their appearance (one eye looking in, one eye looking up) tells you that the author was openly mocking those who are too smart for their own good, and won't explore their intellect beyond the realm of pure metaphysical context.
