Grove City Slang
Know the slang, know the school. The following is a list of things you really need to know before coming to Grove City. The more of these words you know, the better off you’ll be.
- Chapel Card
Each student receives 16 paper chapel cards per semester and is required to hand one in after each chapel service that they attend.
- Civ classes
Required core classes in the civilization series; also called humanities core.
- Crawford Social
A large room in the basement of the Crawford Administrative Building.
- Creeking
A traditional activity that involves throwing a newly engaged guy into Wolf Creek’s muddy depths.
- Desk Hostess
A female student, paid by the school to sit at the lobby entrance of women’s dormitories that answers phones and assists residents and visitors.
- Dessert Theater
An on-campus event where senior honoraries present a jazz-club atmosphere featuring student talents and sweet treats.
- El Ed
Elementary Education Major.
- Faculty Follies
A yearly event where faculty members present their talents and “follies” for the student body.
- FitWell
Fitness and Wellness, the required freshman health/phys ed class.
- GCC
A faster way to get out the name of the school, Grove City College.
- Gee
Geedunk, the food services provided by the student union.
- Greek Unity Week
A week where Greeks participate in pledging activities and celebrate their differences.
- Grove City Family
A title that the administration has used to describe the people and environment of Grove City College.
- Grover
Generally defined as any student who attends Grove City College. Also more technically defined as a freshman girl who has been kissed by an upperclassman guy on Rainbow Bridge.
- HAL
Hall of Arts and Letters; the name will change if someone donates the necessary amount to have the building named in their honor.
- Huma Classes
The humanities core classes required for all students.
- IM Room
The intramural room—divided into two parts, green and brown.
- Inner Quad
The quad located inside MAP Dormitory.
- Intervis
Inter-visitation, weekend hours when students visit members of the opposite sex in their dorm rooms.
- Ket Rec
Ketler Recreational Facility located in Ketler Dormitory.
- MAP (cafeteria)
The Mary Anderson Pew Café located in the Mary Anderson Pew Dormitory.
- MAP (dormitory)
Mary Anderson Pew Dormitory, not to be confused with MEP.
- Mechie
A nickname for the mechanical engineering students.
- MEP
Mary Ethel Pew Dormitory, not to be confused with MAP.
- Mole Hole
The basement of West Dormitory.
- OBOB
Orientation Board Off Broadway.
- Old MAP
A fancy room used for receptions, dances, and dessert theaters.
- Pew
Pew Fine Arts Center.
- Rainbow Bridge
The Stone Bridge that arches over Wolf Creek and connects Upper Campus to Lower Campus. It is the magic spot where an upperclassman guy can kiss a freshman girl and make her a “Grover.”
- RDs
Residential directors; Full-time staff that lives in the dormitories and supervises student life in those residence halls.
- SAC
Student Activities Center.
- Senior Scramble
The mad dash that some seniors make to get a girlfriend or boyfriend before leaving Grove City College.
- SGA
Student Government Association.
- Sparkie
A nickname for the electrical engineering students.
- Stacks
The quiet library hallways with desks for quiet studiers.
- TLC
Technological Learning Center.
- Tower
Fourth floor Crawford where the school newspaper has its office.
- Vespers
A Sunday evening worship service held in the chapel, a chapel card is accepted.
- Wolf Creek
The murky stream that separates Upper Campus from Lower Campus.
