Georgius Florentius, who would become Gregory, Bishop of Tours, was born in the capital city of the Arverni (the people of Auvergne). In his De virtutibus sancti Martini (c. 593; The Miracles of Saint Martin, 1949), he provides the information that he was born on Saint Andrew’s Day thirty-four years before his installation in 573 as the nineteenth bishop of Tours—that would be in 539.
