The Great Santini contains three main characters and many supporting characters. Bull and Lillian Meecham and their eldest child, Ben, gain most of the novel's attention. As the protagonist, Ben must counter his overbearing father's physical and verbal abuse while trying to sort out his confusion between love and hate for the man.
