They would do this to make it less obvious they were having an affair to those on the train who might be from East Egg and thus recognize him, yet know that he was with someone other than Daisy, his wife.
Tom had a small apartment in the city for them to use on their rendezvous, and even bought Myrtle several changes of clothes to look more elegant when spending time with him. She would often invite her friends to show off her new man, who was much wealthier than her husband, George, who was a gas station attendant.
