In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby doesn't really have friends; he has acquaintances who like to take advantage of his lavish hospitality, though there are a few odd characters who seem to sincerely like him for himself. Gatsby knows Jordan Baker as an acquaintance whom he includes in hospitality and gala affairs.

Gatsby has no illusions about the hundreds of people he surrounds himself with, knowing that rumors about his past mar the general opinion of him. However, he trusts Jordan enough to ask her to approach Nick to set up a reunion meeting between himself and Daisy. In order to entrust Jordan with such a monumental secret request, his assessment of her is proven to be that he thinks her trustworthy and reliable.
