In Chapter 7, Wilson tells Tom when they stop for gas on their way to New York that "I just got wised up to something funny the last two days." He goes on to tell Tom that he wants to take Myrtle and go west. Nick, the narrator says Wilson had foundĀ out that "Myrtle had some sort of life apart from him in another world."
In Chapter 8, after Myrtle's death, Michaelis is trying to comfort Wilson, and Wilson shows him a dog leash he found on their bureau. He remembers he said to Myrtle, "God knows what you've been doing." Then he warns Myrtle, "God sees everything." Obviously, Wilson made the connection, especially since they didn't have a dog. This information makes George physically ill.
