Ironically, Gatsby says he has to stay in town to "protect" Daisy. He has no idea Daisy and Tom are packing their bags and preparing to leave town themselves. The the subject of the conversation turns to the past as Gatsby recounts his Dan Cody experience and early days with Daisy. He explains how Daisy became impatient after Gatsby was sent to Oxford after the war. By the time Gatsby returned to Louisville, Daisy had already married Tom and they were on their honeymoon. Gatsby seems to have no clue that he is in danger and decides to go for a swim. This exemplifies his naivete and misplaced trust in Daisy, who doesn't really care what happens to Gatsby at this time.
