While listening to Gatsby's recitation of his personal background with all its seemingly outlandish claims, Nick is both shocked and amazed when Gatsby shows him two souvenirs of his past: a picture of Gatsby with a group of young men at Oxford and a medal awarded by the country of Montenegro to "Major Jay Gatsby" in recognition of his Valour Extraordinary. In the picture, Gatsby stands with the other young men, all wearing blazers; he holds a cricket bat in his hand. Nothing about the picture suggests that it is not authentic. The medal, to Nick's astonishment, also looks quite authentic. After studying Gatsby's picture and medal, Nick concludes, "Then it was all true."
