The last two pages tie all the major themes together, the American Dream, appearance versus reality, and moral corruption. Gatsby appeared to have achieved the American dream, making himself rich out of poverty. But, all the moral compromises caught up with him in the process and cost him his life. In the final pages, Nick shows that everything Gatsby appeared to have was false -- wealth, power, friends. He shows that the American Dream is fragile and full of faults, seen in the reflection of the unexplored beauty of the "New World," which is now replaced by large, empty houses with obscene graffiti marking its driveway.
