In “The Great Gatsby” dreams and honesty are related to each other in that each major character wants to achieve the American Dream yet does not lead an honest life in order to achieve that dream.  Gatsby would be the first example.  More than anything in the world, he wants Daisy.  In order to actually get Daisy for the little amount of time that he does, he has to create a completely artificial life and past for himself.  Nothing in his life has ever been achieved through anything less than lies and cheating.  Tom Buchannan wants people to think that he is a hard-working family man with strong family values; meanwhile, Tom is constantly cheating on his wife with other women (only Myrtle in the novel but others are mentioned).
