The four story homes stood close together with extraordinary craftsmanship.  Perfectly white driveways and pristine lawns manicured with care were bejeweled with dew in mid morning.  Unfortunately there was not one owner there to enjoy them.  Drudging off to work every morning, the moms and dads who live here won't see their home again until far into the night, their one-year-olds reaping the benefits of "school": a modern euphemism for "high-priced daycare."  The copious and extravagant Southern Village playgrounds reeking a weekday silence, quiet and eerie.  Frolicking in the only American way to afford their lavish lifestyles, they allow only their cleaning ladies and lawn care workers to enjoy the fruits of their labor.  So stands the American Dream.

My description of the prominent subdivision, Southern Village, in Chapel Hill, NC  (or any prominent subdivision ANYWHERE in this country) is the embodiment of the values from West Egg in the Great Gatsby.  It is the home of the new rich, for people who haven't always known wealth and who continue to have to work hard for their wealth, yet their wealth corrupts them just the same.  Here you can see the reason why Nick longed to return to the Midwest by the end of the novel.
