As curiosity peaks concerning Gatsby, the lights fail to go on one Saturday night. Visitors in automobiles stay a few minutes and leave. When Nick inquires about Gatsby’s welfare, the “butler” allays his concerns. The next day Gatsby explains he has dismissed his servants in order to protect Daisy’s reputation when she comes to visit him in the afternoons.
