Ch.59 marks the ending of "Great Expectations." Pip on his return from the East after a period of eleven years first visits Joe and Biddy and then decides to "secretly ...revisit the site of the old house (Miss Havisham's house) that evening, alone, for her sake. Yes even so. For Estella's sake." When he does so, he coincidentally meets Estella who is now a widow. She is now a much humbled person. Her marriage to Bentley Drummle had been an unhappy one and Drummle himself had died two years ago.
After the usual pleasantaries, they discuss their future plans. Estella has decided to demolish Satis House and rebuild it. She has come here to take one last look at it before it is demolished and rebuilt.
When Estella asks Pip what his future plans are Pip replies, "I work hard for a sufficient living, and therefore-Yes I do well." The implication is that he will return to work at the business house as a partner alongwith Clarriker and Herbert in the East.
They then discuss the past which still haunts both of them. Estella once again seeks Pip's forgiveness, "be as considerate and good to me as your were, and tell me we are friends."
Pip replies, "we are friends" and Estella concludes their final meeting saying, "and will continue friends apart.
