"that the place was changed, and that Estella was gone out of it for ever."
More significantly, he discovers a very lonely and much repentant Miss Havisham. She tells Pip that she wants to prove to him "that she is not all stone" and asks him what she can do for his friend Herbert.
Pip then very hesitantly and reluctantly admits that he needs the sum of nine hundred pounds to help Herbert in his business.
Miss Havisham writes out a note instructing Mr.Jaggers to give Pip the sum of nine hundred pounds which Pip will give to Herbert:
"This is an authority to him (Mr.Jaggers) to pay you that money, to lay out at your irresponsible discretion for your friend."
The irony of situation is that Pip does not help Joe financially but instead helps Herbert.
