He assumes at this point that she is behind his "expectations." Joe, however, is afraid that she might think that Pip and Joe are looking for more handouts, but he agrees to let Pip go. Pip's real reason behind going is Estella. He longs to see her again, but is disappointed when Mrs. Pocket answers the door instead. Then when caught looking around for Estella, Miss Havisham informs him that she is learning to be a lady abroad.
