In Ch.15 Pip, although he is uninvited, visits Miss Havisham. Sarah Pocket reluctantly lets him into the house.   Miss Havisham thinks that Pip has come to ask her for money and she immediately tells him, "you'll get nothing." After he has reassured her that he does not want any money from her, she tells him to come back on his birthday.

Pip looks around hoefully to get a glimpse of Estella, but there is no sign of her.  Miss Havisham on realising that Pip wants to meet  Estella, very gleefully and sadistically, tells him that she has gone "abroad... educating for a lady; far out of reach; prettier than ever admired by all who see her. Do you feel that you have lost her?"

In Ch.29, Estella tells him "that she had but just come home from France."

Charles Dickens himself was one in love with a very rich girl called Maria Beadnell. The girl's parents did not approve of Dickens and did not want their duaghter to get married to him, so they sent Maria to Paris, just like how Miss Havisham sent Estella to France.
