Pip begins his apprenticeship to Joe and feels that “it is a most miserable thing to feel ashamed of home.” Pip realizes that he could have run off and become a sailor, but it is because of Joe that he does not. He fears that Estella will come to the forge and see him at his dirtiest, and he imagines her face in the flames of the fire in the forge. Pip is still trying to learn...
