The most striking literary quality of "The Grave" is the extensive symbolism that adds multiple meanings to the story. The plot is short and simple in itself, but the symbolism gives the story such depth and substance that in a few short pages Porter succeeds in covering several themes.

The treasures the children find in the cemetery have multiple meanings. Miranda finds the dove and Paul finds the ring, and at once the children exchange treasures. This event indicates that Miranda has begun a transformation. She is attracted to the ring as a woman would be attracted to it....
