Katherine Anne Porter was born Callie Russell Porter in Indian Creek, Texas, on May 15,1890. She grew up on a farm in Kyle, Texas, a small town just outside of Austin, where she was raised by her grandmother. After the death of her grandmother in 1901, Porter attended several convent schools in Texas and Louisiana before eloping at the age of sixteen. Over the next years, Porter had four unsuccessful marriages but achieved great success as a writer. She began as a journalist, working in Denver, New York, and in Mexico, and her work as a journalist led her to develop the realistic style...
