Both in setting and theme, The Grapes of Wrath is kin to In Dubious Battle. The California setting is common to most of Steinbeck's best fiction, however, and the focus on down-and-out characters struggling for survival in California links this work with Tortilla Flat (1935), Of Mice and Men (1937), and others in the Steinbeck canon.
