The first truly global empire in the modern world was that ruled by Philip II, king of Spain, from 1556 to 1598. At its height it included, in Europe, both Spain and Portugal; large parts of Italy, including Naples, Sicily, Sardinia and Milan; Franche-Comté; and the Netherlands. Strategic ports in North Africa, such as Tangier, Oran, and Tunis, provided Philip’s Mediterranean fleet with bases to strike against Turkish naval power.
